Laid off from Microsoft: what to do now

Who was cut

Xbox CEO Asha Sharma called it the biggest restructuring in Xbox's history and told staff the division has been operating at margins 3 to 10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses. Four studios, Compulsion Games, Double Fine Productions, Ninja Theory, and Undead Labs, are leaving Microsoft entirely as part of the reset.
The rest of the cuts landed hardest in commercial sales, as Microsoft reshapes its sales and consulting organization, and in engineering, where the company says roles and priorities are shifting company-wide. A Washington state WARN filing tied to this round covers 605 people in Redmond, spanning software engineering, product management, sales strategy, data science, business program management, marketing, and game design. Those notices went out the same day the cuts took effect, not 60 days ahead, which is the window a law firm is now investigating as a possible WARN Act violation.
Microsoft framed the timing around three things: Xbox's weak margins and a Game Pass strategy that hasn't grown as expected, a 30% stock slide that's wiped out roughly $1.2 trillion in market value over nine months, and a new $2.5 billion push called Frontier Company that's moving 6,000 engineering and AI roles closer to customers. None of that is about how you did your job. It's a capital allocation call about where Microsoft is putting its money next.
Where Microsoft alumni are landing
If you were at one of the four spun-off studios, you have more clarity than most people reading this today. Compulsion Games and Double Fine are going independent and keeping the rights to their games, with Microsoft providing runway funding to help them find new investors and publishers. Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are moving to new ownership with funding to finish the games already in progress. None of that guarantees your specific role survives the transition, but it does mean the studio itself, and the work you were doing, has a next chapter.
If you're one of the roughly 1,600 immediate Xbox cuts outside those four studios, be honest with yourself about the market you're entering. Industry surveys have found close to half of laid-off game workers still hadn't landed another role within the following year, and design, narrative, and art roles have seen the steepest cuts industrywide as AI tools take on more of that work. That's not a reason to panic, it's a reason to widen your search past game studios into adjacent tech and simulation work sooner rather than later.

Prepping for the interviews ahead
You'll get asked why you left, and the answer fits in two sentences: Microsoft cut about 4,800 roles, two-thirds of them at Xbox, to fix Xbox's margins and fund a $2.5 billion shift toward embedding engineers with AI customers, and your role was on the losing side of that math. Anyone hiring in 2026 has seen enough of these rounds to not need more explanation than that.

What severance is Microsoft offering in this round?
Microsoft's standard formula, reported across past rounds, is 2 weeks of base pay per year of service with a minimum of 60 days of pay, plus 6 months of COBRA subsidy at the full employer rate and career transition services through an external provider for up to 6 months.
Treat that as a starting point, not a confirmed number for this specific round. Read your own agreement before signing anything. Stock vesting extensions, a later official separation date, and outplacement length are the terms people most often get moved in negotiation.
Did Microsoft give 60 days notice under the WARN Act?
For at least some employees, it looks like no. A Washington WARN filing tied to this round covers 605 people in Redmond, and a law firm has opened an investigation into whether Microsoft gave those employees the 60 days of notice the federal WARN Act requires for a mass layoff at a company this size, since the cuts were announced July 6 and took effect July 7.
If you got little or no notice, that's worth a conversation with an employment lawyer, not something to assume away. Firms investigating WARN Act claims typically offer a free initial consultation, and back pay and benefits for the notice period are the usual remedy if a violation is found.
Can I get unemployment while receiving severance?
It depends on your state and on how the severance is structured. Some states reduce or delay unemployment benefits while severance is paying out, others don't count it at all, and a lump sum is often treated differently than salary continuation.
File the week your job ends regardless, and let your state make the call. Benefits generally are not retroactive, so filing late costs you more than filing and finding out your payment is reduced for a while.
When should I file for unemployment?
The week your employment actually ends, not when severance runs out. Since a lot of these terminations took effect July 7, that's the date that should be on your paperwork. Processing takes time in most states, so an earlier filing date means an earlier first check if you're eligible.
What happens to my health insurance?
You get 60 days after coverage ends to elect COBRA, which continues your current plan at full cost plus a 2% administrative fee. Before committing to that, compare marketplace plans at healthcare.gov, since losing job-based coverage qualifies you for a special enrollment period outside the normal window. Check whether your household now qualifies for Medicaid too.
My studio is being spun off, not shut down. Am I still losing my job?
Not necessarily, and it's worth treating this differently than a straight layoff. Compulsion Games and Double Fine are going independent and keeping their IP, and Ninja Theory and Undead Labs are moving to new ownership with funding to keep working on their current games. Whether your specific role continues depends on what the new owner or independent studio needs, which is a separate conversation from the roughly 1,600 immediate Xbox cuts that are straightforward eliminations.
